Something Overheard

Sometimes we hear only a very small part of a conversation.

For example, all of the following were heard in a supermarket:

"Do you know where they found him? You just won't believe it when I tell you!"

"She threw it at him. Wouldn't you, after what he'd done?".

"It was covered up by wallpaper, see, and when they stripped the room they found this hole in the plaster. It was in there!"

"I'm sick of his moaning. If he goes on like that I'm leaving"

"When they came back, they didn't have it any more. It had gone. Just vanished!"

Pretend that you heard one of these pieces of conversation.

Who were the two people involved, the speaker and the listener? Were they two men, two women, or a man and a woman? Were they old or young? Were they related? Who were they talking about? What had happened, to cause them to say what they did? What happened afterwards?

Tell your ideas to the rest of the class. Ask if anyone has alternative explanations. Using your ideas and the ideas suggested by your classmates, try to make up a story.
